Symptoms and disorders in children and adolescents

Depending on the age and developmental stage of the children and adolescents, different disorders may come to the fore.

The most common symptoms and problems include:

Developmental crises/delays

If your child has difficulty mastering important developmental steps, such as separation at kindergarten or school, a child-psychiatric verification is useful. Through specific support at an early stage, problems can often be positively influenced.

Difficult family situations

Parental separation or divorce, the loss of a family member, and even parents’ psychological problems and frequent conflicts within the family can heavily impact the inner life of children and adolescents.

Anxiety and depression in children

Depression or anxiety disorders often go undetected in children and adolescents for a long time, which can lead to developmental disturbances. If a child appears listless, irritable, or often has stomach ache, they may be depressed.

Autism spectrum and Asperger’s syndrome

Children who suffer from autism, e.g., Asperger’s syndrome, have problems interacting with other people. They find it difficult to understand what others think and feel. They need help forming social contacts and dealing with feelings.

Regulatory disturbance in babies

If your baby simply cannot be soothed, cries excessively for no apparent reason, does not sleep well, or displays problems feeding, this may be due to a regulatory disturbance, especially in the first year of life.

Psychosomatic symptoms

Emotional problems often manifest themselves as physical symptoms such as a stomach ache or headaches in children and adolescents. Skin disorders, particularly eczema, or asthma can also be indicative of psychological stress.

Compulsive disorders in children and adolescents

Compulsive disorders usually begin in children between the ages of seven and twelve. Common compulsive symptoms are compulsive checking, compulsive orderliness and the compulsion to count, or obsessional washing. Prompt treatment can prevent the symptoms from becoming chronic.

Behavioral disorders in children and adolescents

Aggressive and oppositional behavior toward other children or adults may be an indication of abnormal social behavior. It is important to recognize the causes of this and to provide treatment promptly.

Performance disorder such as dyslexia

A partial performance disorder such as dyslexia (reading spelling difficulty LRS) or dyscalculia (weak arithmetic) can lead to mental and academic problems in children and young people. Qualified diagnostics and cooperation with the school often help.

Eating disorders in children and adolescents

Feelings and food are very strongly linked. Disorders in eating behavior among children and adolescents include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Girls are twice as susceptible to these disorders as boys.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

ADHD and ADD are characterized by the following symptoms: Difficulty concentrating, impulsivity, and often physical restlessness or a strong compulsion for movement. Treatment depends on how strongly the syndrome affects day-to-day life.
